European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
